The microcompounder has a capacity of making polymer nanocomposites. Mini-injection molding machine can subsequently prepare tensile/flexural specimen from the blends/nanocomposites. Thus, the facility offers an option to effectively blend as well as mold smaller quantity of polymeric materials and prepare test specimens for tensile and flexur

DSM XploreTM 5 cm3 twin-screw Micro-Compounder :

Main Drive :

The machine is equipped with a divisible extruder housing and double, co-rotating detachable extruder screws with an integrated adjustable driving gear. The housing has been specially heat-treated and coated to minimise wear. The screws are surface hardened.

Heating System :

Two separately controlled heating zones, with an adjustable temperature range. Temperature measurement in the melt is included in the standard machine. Maximum operating temperature 350oC. Heating time from 20oC to 240oC is 10 min. Cooling time from 240oC to 80oC is 10 min.

Cooling System :

Standard water cooling unit allows rapid cooling between experiments. With cooling unit, cooling from 240oC to 80oC takes 10 minutes.

Hopper :

Manually operated mini-hopper, capacity 5 cm3.

Supply Voltage :

208-240 Vac.

Controls :

Touch screen control panel is integrated in the machine housing.

Design Features :

  • Heated, removable barrel and plunger are operated with compressed air. Barrel may be filled with melt from microcompounder. Moulds are heated and easy to replace.

The Microcompounder central facility consists of conical twin-screw microcompounder and a mini-injection molding machine. Microcompounder central facility has been installed in 2006. These equipments were procured by the Institute (Special Grant). This facility is located in the basement of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS, B11).

The microcompounder has a capacity of mixing few grams of polymeric materials (up to 5 ml) during melt-mixing of polymer blends or making polymer nanocomposites. Twin-screws and conical shaped barrel offer high applied shear and hence better mixing. In addition to this a "re-circulating channel" provides a good control of the mixing. Mini-injection molding machine can subsequently prepare tensile/flexural specimen from the blends/nanocomposites.

Thus, the facility offers an option to effectively blend as well as mold smaller quantity of polymeric materials and prepare test specimens for tensile and flexur

Instructions for sample preparation/submission

Sample should be dry, and its melting temperature should be less than 350oC. It should be in the form of either beads or powder. Bead size more than 4mm can't be processed. 
Please bring extra 10 -15gm of your sample polymer.
