A Cost-Effective Antimicrobial Photodynamic Cosmetic Solution
Abstract

The invention provides a novel nail enamel composition with photoactivated antibacterial and antifungal properties to treat onychomycosis. The composition includes Rose Bengal dye as a photosensitizer, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) when exposed to light, killing microbes. The enamel also contains polymers like cellulose acetate and PMMA to form a durable, water-resistant film, and lactic acid to enhance penetration. This formulation offers a convenient and effective way to treat nail infections with prolonged antimicrobial action.

Problem Statement
  • Onychomycosis affects up to 19% of the world’s population, causing significant discomfort and complications.
  • Current treatments face challenges with microbial resistance, limited efficacy, side effects, and difficulty in drug delivery through the nail's keratin structure.
  • Traditional topical treatments are easily removed and have poor penetration, reducing effectiveness.

There is a need for a cost-effective, non-toxic, water-resistant nail enamel with extended antimicrobial action for a more effective and convenient treatment of onychomycosis.

Uniqueness of the Solution
  • Broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity exhibited, effective against onychomycosis.
  • Prolonged protection provided by a durable, water-resistant layer over the nails, giving a one-stop solution to microbial killing.
  • Cost-effective, using affordable antibacterial agents without compromising efficacy.
Prototype Details

The efficacy of the solution has been tested in laboratory conditions using bacterial and fungal plates. The nail enamel composition demonstrated no bacterial growth on plates with E. coli and S. aureus. It also more effectively inhibited the growth of C. albicans compared to just RB dye.

Current Status of Technology
