This invention discloses a non-toxic, wash-resistant antimicrobial nanocomposite comprising chitosan and calcium silicate nanoparticles. The developed NanoFabric retains its antibacterial efficacy after repeated washes and is suitable for a wide range of textile applications.
Current antimicrobial textiles rely on metallic agents which are toxic, non-biodegradable, and lose functionality after limited washes. There is a need for a durable, eco-friendly antimicrobial textile.
- Biocompatible Composition: The antimicrobial formulation is made using a 1:1 ratio of chitosan and calcium silicate nanoparticles, ensuring it is safe for human use and contact.
- No Heavy Metals: The technology completely eliminates the use of heavy metals such as silver or other metallic nanoparticles, thereby avoiding associated toxicity and environmental hazards.
- Wash Durability: The treated fabric retains up to 99.99% antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae even after 20 wash cycles.
- Broad Fabric Compatibility: The antimicrobial coating is compatible with a wide range of fabrics including cotton, wool, nylon, polyester, and their blends, making it highly versatile.
- Flexible Processing: The application process involves the use of citric acid as a cross-linking agent and Tween 80 as a surfactant, applied through a simple and scalable pad-dry-cure method.
NanoFabric prototype was developed by coating cotton fabric using the formulated antimicrobial solution, followed by room and oven drying. SEM and FTIR analyses confirmed successful coating. Antibacterial testing (AATCC TM-147, AATCC 100) demonstrated high efficacy.
The technology has been demonstrated through hypothesis testing in both lab settings.
