This patent describes a clever, portable device designed to make finding veins much easier and less painful. Imagine a small, U-shaped gadget that you can gently place on a patient's elbow or arm. This U-shape creates a clear window to see the veins underneath the skin. Inside this U-frame, there are several small lights (like LEDs) that illuminate the area. What's really neat is that you can adjust how bright these lights are just by touching a sensor, which means you can get the perfect view for different people, whether they have light or dark skin, or are a child or an adult. Another smart feature is that the sides of this U-frame are angled, acting like a built-in guide to help doctors or nurses insert the needle precisely and at the correct angle. This invention aims to solve common problems like multiple needle pricks, the high cost of existing vein detectors, and the difficulty of using some devices. It's designed to be affordable, easy to use, and hygienic, making venipuncture a smoother and less stressful experience for both patients and healthcare providers.
Accurate vein detection is an active research area which is concerned with spotting a patient’s vein reliably and accurately for a quick, painless treatment by avoiding multiple punchers. Current methods include manual procedures, ultrasound, or red and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Present applications of these methods are either not applicable to certain patient groups, have low visibility for darker skin tones, face high cost, or require special training to use the equipment. NIR is the most reliable and accurate method present, but is not widely used due to cost and portability issues. Thus, there is a need for developing an accessible, low cost NIR vein detection device for use in the Indian healthcare ecosystem.
- Optimum viewing area: A U-shaped open viewing area for veni-puncture designed based on multiple user feedbacks and observations.
- Needle guiding shape: A 35° chamfered edge to guide the needle during the puncture to minimize pain and undesirable side effects from a bad puncture.
- Hygienic and clean design: Biocompatible materials used to form a single smooth and continuous inner surface to avoid dirt accumulation over multiple uses.
- No clamping mechanism: Movable clamps make the product not usable for obese patients while making it rigid and adding moving parts, reducing the product life.
The product uses six 635nm 1W red HI L.E.D. The power source used in the product is a 1100mAh battery with a 7.4V voltage rating and a 300mA forward current. In addition to these, capacitance touch control for the power supply and brightness are built into the product. An open U-shaped viewing area with a 35° chamfered edge is provided to view the vein and make the puncture using the edge as a guide. There are no clamps or moving parts and the inner surface has been made smooth, making the device long-lasting, durable and hygienic.
