A Thermally Stable Tire Sealant
Abstract

A tire sealant composition for use in tubeless tires is provided, primarily designed to seal the tire around the wheel rim and specifically in the tread area to protect against punctures. The composition includes a polymeric material, carrier fluid, and particulate system, and is both non-toxic and non-corrosive.

Uniqueness of the Solution
  • Provide a tire sealant that can be easily introduced inside the tire via the nozzle without clogging
  • Ensure long-term sealing in the event of a puncture, allowing for extended distances to be covered without significant air loss
  • Base the sealing effect of the invention on factors other than the drying of a volatile solvent
  • Efficacy of the sealant for long durations and over a wide temperature range
  • uses non-toxic chemical to provide an effective and permanent puncture sealing composition
  • Does not corrode the metallic rim of the wheel as it does not contain any oxidizing agent or chemical groups
Prototype Details

A tire sealant composition of the following specifications has been defined

  • Blocking agent includes glass beads and glass hollow microspheres
  • Atleast 5% of the total composition comprises the blocking agent.
  • Atleast 50% of the blocking agent comprises of glass beads
  • Polymeric material used (preferably polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS))
  • Carrier fluid is used (preferably silicone oil)
  • The sealant contains 10 to 30 vol% of siloxane polymeric material
Current Status of Technology

A tire sealant composition was formulated and tested in a specially designed high-pressure cell and tires. The sealant was found to effectively seal puncture holes made by nails of up to 8 mm in diameter. On-road tests were successfully conducted on tube tires of motorbikes, four-wheelers, buses, taxis and on tubeless tires in bicycles Indian and US Patents have been granted. Sealant composition is available for tube as well tubeless tires.
