The present invention relates to an iodinated polymer latex, a water-based composite functionalized with an antimicrobial system. Specifically, this invention pertains to iodinated polymer latex where the antimicrobial component is glycol-based. When applied as a coating over surfaces, particularly the walls of a house, this invention can effectively control the formation of biofilm and mold. The entire system is designed to target and prevent biofilm formation on surfaces or walls.

An antimicrobial water-based iodinated polymer latex composite comprising 99% to 95% of polymer latex (containing 42% solid contents selected from acrylates-based polymer) and 1% to 5% of antimicrobial agent comprising a mixture of antimicrobial compound, glycol-based solvent and water-soluble polymer has been proposed. The acrylates-based polymer is selected from Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA), Polystyrene Butyl Acrylate (PSBA) or a copolymer of Methyl Methacrylate and Butyl Acrylate [P(MMA/BA)] latex synthesized through emulsion polymerization. the water-soluble polymer containing in the ethylene glycol is polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). The invention has a proof of concept developed. A process for the preparation of water-based iodinated polymer latex has been proposed. It has also been tested for its antimicrobial activity.
