A Thermally Stable Tire Sealant
Abstract

A tire sealant composition for use in tubeless tires is provided, primarily designed to seal the tire around the wheel rim and specifically in the tread area to protect against punctures. The composition includes a polymeric material, carrier fluid, and particulate system, and is both non-toxic and non-corrosive.

Problem Statement

Conventional mobile tire sealants are typically based on latex dispersion with water as the primary solvent. Over time, these sealants dry and coagulate inside the tire, forming a rubbery mass that limits their effective lifespan and hinders permanent tire repair. This drying process is accelerated at high temperatures, reducing their usability in elevated conditions. Also, most sealants have an unpleasant odor, making them inconvenient to use.

Uniqueness of the Solution
  • This novel tire sealant can be easily introduced inside the tire via the nozzle without clogging.
  • It ensures long-term sealing in the event of a puncture, allowing for extended distances to be covered without significant air loss.
  • The sealing effect of the invention is based on factors other than the drying of a volatile solvent.
  • The efficacy of the sealant extends for long durations and over a wide temperature range.
  • It uses non-toxic chemical to provide an effective and permanent puncture sealing composition.
  • It does not corrode the metallic rim of the wheel as it does not contain any oxidizing agent or chemical groups.
Prototype Details

The tire sealant composition is as follows:

  • Blocking agent includes glass beads and glass hollow microspheres
  • At least 5% of the total composition comprises the blocking agent
  • At least 50% of the blocking agent comprises of glass beads
  • Polymeric material used (preferably polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS))
  • Carrier fluid is used (preferably silicone oil)
  • Sealant contains 10 to 30 vol% of siloxane polymeric material
Current Status of Technology

A tire sealant composition was formulated and tested in a specially designed high-pressure cell and tires. The sealant was found to effectively seal puncture holes made by nails of up to 8 mm in diameter. On-road tests were successfully conducted on tube tires of motorbikes, four-wheelers, buses, taxis and on tubeless tires in bicycles. Indian and US Patents have been granted. Sealant composition is available for tube as well tubeless tires.
