A biopsy is a medical test commonly performed by a surgeon, interventional radiologist, or an interventional cardiologist involving sampling of cells or tissues for examination. It is the medical removal of tissue from a living subject to determine the presence or extent of a disease. The tissue is generally examined under a microscope by a pathologist, and can also be analyzed chemically. When an entire lump or suspicious area is removed, the procedure is called an excisional biopsy. When only a sample of tissue is removed with preservation of the histological architecture of the tissue’s cells, the procedure is called an incisional biopsy or core biopsy. When a sample of tissue or fluid is removed with a needle in such a way that cells are removed without preserving the histological architecture of the tissue cells, the procedure is called a needle aspiration biopsy. Biopsies are most commonly performed for insight into possible cancerous and inflammatory conditions. Typically, a needle biopsy is an important and easy procedure to affirm cancer. If cancer is present the whole tissue has to be taken out along with the biopsy tract. To prevent this and for diagnostic purposes, biopsy is used. Typically, in core needle biopsy, a hollow needle is used to take samples of tissue of the affected area. It is the most preferred biopsy method because it is accurate and uses a very small area which gets affected in the surgical process. The biopsy gives flexibility to a surgeon while causing minimum damage to the patient. A reusable biopsy device has been developed that can adjust the size and length of tissue sample.

A multi-use, customizable and universal biopsy device has been developed. It is designed so that it is easy to use and provides flexibility to surgeon that is highly required. The salient features of the device are:

  • It provides length adjustments.
  • This biopsy device also offers provision for needle change, thereby making it multi-use sterilizable.
  • All sizes and gauges of needles can be incorporated in the said biopsy device.
  • This device also provides length adjustment of a tissue sample, thereby making it usable to take biopsy sample from any part of body.
  • Also, the present device provides an option for taking variable thicknesses of the sample by changing the gauge of the needle.
  • An ergonomic handle designed for ease of use by the surgeon
