Method and Air Purification System Based on Electro-Hydrodynamic Vortex Technique for Purifying Ambient Air
Abstract

This innovation addresses the important issue of air purification, which is vital for human health and well-being in indoor residential and workplace environments. It introduces a novel air purification system that utilizes an electro-hydrodynamic vortex (EHDV) with a self-cleaning mechanism to purify ambient air.

Problem Statement

The growing concern for human health and well-being in indoor residential and workplace environments requires reliable air purification. Current popular techniques (such as passive HEPA filters, electrostatic methods, and electromagnetic wave irradiation) have limitations of lacking an automated disposal of impurities.

Uniqueness of the Solution
  • This innovation provides reliable and consistent performance without the need for manual maintenance.
  • The design is based on a unique concept of creating microscale vortices in air using electrostatically forced oscillation of milli- to micro-sized liquid droplets and using them to capture airborne particles.
  • It poses no secondary health hazards, such as infections or pollutant gases like ozone.
  • With a significantly lower energy requirement and compact construction, it is more suitable to be an in-built air purification component of a household air purifier, as compared to the other existing solutions in the market.
  • The system needs only common materials and fabrication methods with lower operating costs as compared to other existing air purifiers.
  • It is more sustainable environmentally throughout its life cycle.
Prototype Details

The air purification system comprises an inlet liquid reservoir containing liquid for circulation through the system and an air purifier stack for circulating both the air to be purified and the liquid used in the purification process. It includes an air purification controller designed to generate an electric field within the air purifier stack. The system also features an outlet liquid reservoir and a liquid filter.

It can have two designs: (i) Design 1 with two rectangular channels facing each other and (ii) Design 2 with a setup comprising concentric cylindrical channels and alternative spaces for water channels and droplets in air.
