The proposed invention consists of seven active switches and a floating capacitor. The conventional active neutral point clamped converter with six switches provides three levels in the output voltage. However, the proposed invention consists of a floating capacitor in which the voltage is maintained equal to half of the DC link. This allows the converter to generate five levels in the output voltage. Hence, the overall THD is improved and the need for the external filter is reduced, which results in high power dense solutions.
To improve the power quality of the converter output voltage, either the number of levels in the output need to be increased or additional filters need to be added. The existing multilevel converter such as cascaded H bridge converter can provide higher levels in the output voltage, but requires more isolated DC supply.
The proposed invention modifies the three-level active neutral point clamped converter by adding an extra switch and capacitor to increase the output voltage levels from three to five.
- Voltage Levels: With the addition of one switch and a capacitor, the proposed invention can provide five levels in the output voltage.
- Lesser Devices: Compared to the conventional H-bridge, the proposed invention requires lesser devices.
- Higher Power Density: The proposed invention achieves lower volume. Hence, it has higher power density.
