Information System for Assisting Visually Impaired People at Bus Stops
Abstract

The invention outlines a kiosk that is designed to be used by people regardless of their sight strength. It consists of a refreshable braille display, providing a tactile output to the users, along with displaying the information on high contrast screens. There are big screens on the back of the kiosk displaying information about the buses arriving at that stop. An operating panel is present that is designed to aid a visually challenged user to use it comfortably to enter their queries. A refreshable tactile display lets the users read the information in braille.

  • Audio based query system: the kiosk designed enables queries regarding public transport times via input buttons or via speaking out their query 
  • Refreshable braille display: the system returns the bus number and the stops in the form of a braille display, which can be scrolled through using buttons in the panel 
  • High contrast display: the kiosk displays the query results as well continuously presenting the information of upcoming buses on that stop on high contrast screens 
  • Auditory system response: if needed, the system is equipped to speak out the bus numbers, stops and the ETA using different buttons on the operating panel
